This is a season of reflection; a time of repentance, preparation, prayer and fasting. An opportunity to focus our sights on true discipleship and becoming who God created us to be in the midst of being our most real and authentic selves.
There was a song sung by Perry Como called "A You're Adorable". In high school our choir and ensemble teacher Mr. Shand used to refer to it as the 'Alphabet song'. It was a song about a young boy named Johnny who liked a certain young girl named Mary. Johnny didn't care for peotry but, he could tell her how he felt about her by sharing what he had learned in class. In a matter of fact sort of way, little Johnny went through the entire alphabet and every letter described an irrisistable quality of Mary. It wasn't just flattery, Johnny was telling her how she affected and changed him.
Writing about the qualities of one that we love should be as simple as ABC. That's exactly what the Psalmist does in the scripture that we dive into today.
Psalm 119 is the longest psalm in the Bible and it's organized by the letters of the Hebrew alphabet beginning with the letter Aleph and ending with Tav. Using each letter to describe why the writer loves God's instruction for life.
Like the writer's passion for God's word, our life can be made richer by spending time alone with Jesus, the one who is the Alpha and the Omega; the Alef and the Tav, the first and last letters in the Greek/ Hebrew alphabets. The Beginning and the End.
As you spend time today reading and meditating on scripture, use your fasting and prayer time to allow your life to become richer and your faith to become deeper.
What God is revealing to you as you pray? How would you describe your passion for God's word at this moment? Would you be able to use every letter of the alphabet to describe what God means to you?
Pray today that God will increase that Holy and intense fire in your heart during this time as He opens up the very words you are reading.
Read: Psalm 119
Lord,
I confess my sins and failures to you and I am very sorry for having sinned against You. Give me the strength to seek and accept Your forgiveness.
Lord Jesus, you poured yourself out completely and died for me that I would have eternal life and I claim that wonderful and indescribable gift of salvation.
Create a clean heart in me and renew me in mind, body and spirit.
I consecrate myself to you Lord and ask that you use me according to your holy will.
I pray in Jesus name.
Amen
